Is India shining?
'India is shining' had become the title song of BJP's campaign for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. Ads with this slogan appear regularly in our newspapers.

This may be the beginning of a publicity blitz. But as Indians let us ask is India shining?

If the bull run in the stock market is an indicator, India is shining. But for how many days? Nobody knows.

GDP growth rate is satisfactory. Balance of payment situation is highly encouraging. Last year we had a good monsoon. Agriculture front is brimming with confidence, so say press reports. So BJP govt must have decided to make hay while sun shines.

But for the mute millions of Indians who are living below poverty line, India is still an 'area of darkness'. This artificial sunshine is not bringing any new light into their lives. Indian society is riddled with conflicts both communal and economical. Poverty deaths are widely reported. For all those, India is not shining.
