1%
is a disgrace
The computer penetration in the land of this great IT Superpower is
a disgraceful 1% only. Read it against the 77% in the US and then you
will have some idea of the discomfort we silently suffer when some clients
from the West make vitriolic comments about the IT preparedness of India.
$1K may be just a few days' salary for an average American but it is
a princely sum in India. If computer penetration has to increase then
the prices of PCs have to be brought down below the Rs 10,000 mark.
This is possible . What is happening is that manufacturers are withdrawing
cheaper processors and related components from the market when more
expensive ,and of course, more powerful ones are introduced. Computing
with 80486 was fine with most users but you can't get anything based
on those processors today. There is a mafia like nexus between thesoftware
manufacturers and the hardware manufactures. The former keep introducing
more and more bloated software - bloatware - which need more memory
and more computing power. In actual fact the average computer user needs
only something very, very modest. Such machines can be built for 8 to
9K. And they will sell in millions.
The government needs to do all things necessary to make this happen.
