Edayar
island
Edayar island, very near to the state capital Trivandrum, is the ideal
get away of holiday-makers.
What makes it so special is that this island, near Thiruvallom, a few
kilometres from Trivandrum, is wholly unspoiled - yet so near to the
city.
No wonder many city dwellers are now discovering the pleasures of heading
for this isle to escape from the hustle and bustle of the overcrowded
city. Moreover, for the discerning cultural tourist, this destination
provides the unique opportunity to have a feel of the old world charm
of a Kerala village.
Edayar, situated at about 7 kms from the city en route to the international
beach resort of Kovalam, the Edayar island is inhabited by just under
500 people. No concrete buildings, and absolutely no blaring of horns
of vehicles - just pure salubrious fresh air and silence.
The tea stalls, reminiscent of rural Kerala, dots the island.
The island, spread over two square kilometres in length and a width
of half-a-kilometre, is complete with a temple, "kavu" and
church. The festivals at these places of worship can also be witnessed
by the tourist.
For the spiritually bend, the ancient Parasurama temple situated on
the bank of Karamana river at Thiruvallom can be an attraction. Edayar
is just a five minute walk from Thiruvallom near the Trivandrum-Kovalam
bypass.
Visitors can either ferry to the island or can opt to use the narrow
iron bridge near Thiruvallom to walk into the island.
