Munnar:
Nature lover's paradise
Munnar, the erstwhile 'Summer capital of the British', has
become the most sought
after holiday destination in South India. It is the luxuriant gift of
nature to the Western Ghats, the eastern border of Kerala, 5000ft above
sea level.
If you seek tranquility you'll find it here in Munnar. The nature-lover's
paradise. Opened up out of virgin forests a century ago by pioneer planters.
Relaxing within the cool stillness of thirty odd estates fanning out
across the expanse of the hills. Within its remote and hoary churches
- gracious, stone structures with antique chandeliers and rosewood pews.
Within its winding lanes filled with the heady fragrance of fresh tea.
Within the picturesque ethereal setting of the Mattupetty Dam as you
go downhill. Or even within the rich tropical forests beyond.
Munnar abounds in animals like elephants and Nilgiri Tahrs and rich
biodiversity teeming with flora and fauna. Among the exotic flora found
in the forests here is the
"Neela Kurinji" . This flower which bathes the hills in blue
every 12 years, will bloom next in 2006 A.D.
Further, Munnar offers the best opportunity you are ever likely to
have to see the tea plantations, to watch tea being picked, to learn
how tea is processed, to enjoy the sweet smell of tea wafting through
the air and to buy the tea directly; fresh from the garden.
Munnar is a fascinating four hour drive from Cochin International Airport
along an undulating road which offers you scenic views of cloud caressed
valleys and tinkling creeks winding their way down to the plains. Sprawling
tea plantations, picture-book towns, winding lanes and holiday facilities
make this a popular Hill Resort.
