Muthanga Muthanga, which is 16kms east of Sulthan Bathery, is located very near to the Karnataka border. The 345 sq. km. Muthanga Sanctuary is rich in fauna and flora and is the biggest abode of wild animals in Malabar. Elephants roam freely here and tigers are sighted frequently. It is home to great herds of deer and Gaur. Many types of monkeys are also seen, as well as those elusive animals, such as the Slender Loris.
Trees and plants growing here are typical of the South Indian moist deciduous forests and West Coast semi evergreen forests. Grasses and bamboo are found in abundance in these forests, among the moist deciduous forests.
Best season to visit is June to October. A drive along the road to Muthanga and further, offers chances to watch these roaming beasts. The forest department has facilities for providing elephant rides to tourists. Getting there: |
