Makalkku
Cast: Suresh Gopi, Shobana
Director: Jayaraj

Jayaraj's
new film Makalkku is based
on a feature written by well-known photographer Rajan Poduval and scripted
by Madambu Kunjilkuttan.
The film revolves around a mentally ill woman played by Shobana who
plays the role of Killeri, a mad woman. She roams in the streets and
footpaths and unknowingly becomes pregnant and gives birth to a lovely
baby girl Manasi.
Makalkku is noteworthy due
to the performance of Shobana and a small girl Baby Rehana. This steamy
tearjerker is able to leave an impact on the audience though it drags
towards the end.
A
pregnant mad woman on the streets gives birth to a baby girl in a hospital.
She has no memory about her past or any emotions and says only one word
and that is Killeri.
Suresh Gopi plays the role of Dr Warrier, a good human being who nurses
Killeri back to normal life. The little baby girl Manasi (Baby Rehana)
is brought up by the doctor, hospital staff and inmates. She grows up
to be an adorable five-year-old as her mother has no motherly feelings
or any sort of emotion. But the law catches up as she is forced to leave
the asylum where she grew up.
Some of the best moments of the film are the interactions between Manasa
and the inmates of the hospital. Shobana is superb as the mad woman.
M J Radhakrishnan's photography and songs by Ramesh Narayana including
the Adnan Sami number are good.
